Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes knows it is in a strong position but doesn’t feel like 2014 marks his best chance to win a second drivers’ championship.
Having taken the title in only his second season in F1 – driving for McLaren in 2008 – Hamilton has only been in with a chance of the championship at the last race on one occasion since. With Mercedes emerging as the pre-season favourites after a strong winter of testing, Hamilton was asked how it feels to have his best chance of adding to his championship tally but said he doesn’t see this year as any different to previous seasons.
“Everyone is talking us up and everyone is predicting the future but we really can’t say what is going to happen this weekend” Hamilton said. “We know that we are strong, we haven’t left any stone unturned, we’ve done absolutely everything we can possibly do. So we’re hoping that we’re going to be at the front – that’s our goal – but we can’t say that’s going to be the case.
