Lewis Hamilton’s refusal to obey team orders, rightly for his own championship hopes, at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday may have cost Nico Rosberg a potential victory.
The Mercedes duo were running on different strategies, with pole-sitter Rosberg on a three stopper while the Briton was on a two-stop strategy.
After rain early in the race and two safety car periods, the Mercedes pair were found uncharacteristically in the mid-field with Rosberg catching up with Hamilton on lap 47 when the team radioed the Briton not to hold up his teammate as he was on a different strategy and was due to pit soon.
Prior to being bunched up behind the 2008 world champion, Rosberg was lapping in the 1 minute 27 bracket, considerably quicker than Hamilton, who had to extend his stints longer than the German. Here are Rosberg’s times:
