Bahrain 2014 – the rating and the fight between team mates

Why? Because you need to see the value of pilots also where the single seater is not competitive. And because the first you have to defeat in Formula 1 is your teammate!

Rating or tires change – we will award tires according to the pilots’ performance in every Grand Prix. The best performance will be awarded with supersoft tires and the worst with rain tires, meaning that a rating of 6 is the maximum and 1 is the minimum. We will not take into account the performance of the car or other things that are not under the direct control of the pilots.

(+) Pilot of the race: Sergio Perez.

(-) Taxi driver of the race: Pastor Maldonado.

Race performance rating: 8 of 10. We were also excited about the race, but, to be honest, the finest battles were between teammates. It was good, but it could have been better.

Red Bull: Vettel rating 4 (10, 6) – Ricciardo rating 6 (13, 4)

Nice of Sebastian Vettel to acknowledge that Ricciardo managed to get more out of the car than him in the Bahrain race. Daniel Ricciardo drove without any complex, with much determination, and, if the first time he passed his teammate because the latter allowed it, the second time there was a more elegant battle that Daniel won. Ricciardo clearly defeated the multiple world champion during qualifications, too. We wonder: what will these races bring?

Mercedes: Rosberg rating 6 (1, 2) – Hamilton rating 6 (2, 1)

For the Mercedes team, we award both pilots with the highest rating, but the victory point in the team goes only to Lewis Hamilton. An extraordinary battle in which no one gave up until the penultimate lap when Nico stopped the attack on his teammate and was happy with the 2nd  place. But these two drivers, together with the others, performed a historic race in one of the most difficult moments in the history of Formula 1.

Ferrari: Alonso rating 5 (9, 9) – Raikkonen rating 5 (5, 10)

Many times during the race, the Ferrari car was faster only than Caterham, Marussia and Sauber, and, after the latter abandoned the race, the Ferrari cars had slower times than even Lotus. The TV caught Luca Montezemollo’s expression when a Ferrari car was passed by a Force India car, and his indignation said it all. In fact, before half the race was over, the Ferrari president left saying there was nothing much that could be done and that “it is very painful for me to see a Ferrari car so slow on the straights”. The F1 Manager point goes to Alonso because he managed to finish the race before his teammate, and the rating 5, equivalent to light tires, goes to both drivers. Indulgently.

McLaren: Button rating 6 (7, 17)  – Magnussen rating 5 (9, 18 )

McLaren did not perform as badly as shown by the results of the race, because both cars had to abandon because of a ‘clutch’. A fit Button, although he finished the race with a technical abandonment, said that present day F1 was not inferior to past Formula 1. Well, we enjoyed the race, too, but let’s be honest – this is too much said. There were times when the fight for 1st place in the race was fought by four single seaters from different teams, and not only by teammates.

Lotus: Grosjean rating 6 (16, 12) – Maldonado rating 1 (17, 14)

Pastor Maldonado should go home with his 35 million USD that carries with him from team to team, year after year. And the only things that makes us glad that the Lotus team is struggling with a mediocre car is that, this way, Maldonado does not have a competitive car so he can boast around. How he entered into Gutierrez and how he then blamed him are beyond pathetic. However, we feel sorry for Grosjean because he doesn’t have a more competitive car with which he could prove his value as he did last year. Maybe starting with Spain he will manage to get some points.

Force India: Hulkenberg rating 5 (11, 5) – Perez rating 6 (4, 3)

We estimated that Nico will have a hard time defeating Sergio, but that he will. But we saw a confident Perez both during qualifications and the race, not afraid to push the pedal, who managed to defeat his teammate categorically. After this race, he is certainly not sorry to have left the McLaren team.

Sauber: Sutil rating 4 (22, 22) – Gutierrez rating 5 (15, 19 )

Gutierrez receives our Bahrain race point. Are the Sauber cars struggling so much also because of the Ferrari motor? We mostly believe that the answer is yes.

Williams: Massa rating 5 (7, 7) – Bottas rating 4 (3, 8 )

It is true that the Williams team was most disadvantaged by the safety car exit when Maldonado overthrew Guttierez. Without this incident, both pilots could have ranked higher in the race; but if we look at where Williams was last year, this result (positions 7 and 8 ) is not a bad one.

Toro Rosso: Kvyat rating 6 (12, 11) – Vergne rating 5 (14, 21)

Kvyat higher than Vergne, but Toro Rosso a lot below its first race from Australia. It is obvious that the building principles for the Toro Rosso car are the same as for the RB single seater. Where one is competitive, so is the other.

Marussia: Bianchi rating 4 (19, 16) – Chilton rating 5 (21, 13)

Chilton is also constant by the 13th ranking obtained during the Sunday race. He brought back the Marussia team on place 10 in front of the Caterham people. We are not awarding him a top rating because he is constantly defeated during qualifications and by a long shot by his teammate, Jules Bianchi.

Bahrain 0 – 1

Caterham: Kobayashi rating 6 (18, 15) – Ericcson rating 4 (20, 19)

The Japanese leads the fight in his team, but he certainly wants more than he is getting so far.
